Set in medieval England, this chilling novel combines the best of modern forensic thrillers with the drama of historical fiction, as a mistress of the art of death--an early version of a medical examiner--arrives in Cambridge from Italy to investigate the suspicious deaths of four children.

Children are being horribly murdered in Cambridge, England and the king requires the services of Dr. Vesuvia Aguilar, midieval coroner or " mistres of death" to find the killer. She is accompanied by her not so merry band of eccentrics to assist her as she struggles with the prejudices of being a woman in an unacceptable position. Definitely an original this forensic mystery will be fun for historical mystery fans.

Mistress of the Art of Death is a great read! Author Ariana Franklin leaves you guessing till the end. There are some unexpected twists and turns to the story which add to the reader's enjoyment. This book has some of the flavor of Umberto Eco's Name of the Rose. If you liked that book or movie, Mistress of the Art of Death is definitely for you!

This is a first class mystery story set in medieval Cambridge, England. There have been a series of horrid murders of children, and the King, Henry 11, through his cousin, the King of Sicily, arranges for a forensic specialist (a woman...slightly unbelievable, but clever) to come and try and solve the problem..
The writing is lively and literate, and the plot is intricate and, once you accept the premise, compelling.
Both my husband and I enjoyed the book....not a usual occurance in our household.

Ariana Franklin brings medieval England to life through her use of imagery. The story itself is gripping and very chilling. However, she avoids the trap of overwhelming the reader by injecting some humor. Very well-developed characters and plot. A must-read for any mystery fan.
