- New York. 1979. Columbia University Press. 1st Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. ISBN: 0231046847. Modern Asian Literature Series. 277 pages. hardcover. Calligraphy by Yugo Sato. Jacket Design by Laiying Chong. FROM THE PUBLISHER-While contemporary Japanese playwrights have finally garnered the attention they deserve at home, their work has generally remained untranslated. Ted Takaya's Modern Japanese Drama: An Anthology is the first collection of its kind in English. In a cogent historical introduction, Takaya unfolds the careers of Japan's various modern theaters, their founders and play-wrights, the crises undergone, and the consequent literary transformations to take place. As Takaya states, Since no anthology of recent modern Japanese drama has so far been published in English, the number of candidates for possible inclusion in this volume was practically unlimited. Thus, in choosing the plays, heavy emphasis was placed on the immediate appeal to the Western reader, in addition to the recognized merit as important dramatic works. ' Takaya then presents annotated translations of plays by five of Japan's leading postwar dramatists: Kobo Abe's You, Too, Are Guilty, a play set in a contemporary apartment, treating with sardonic wit the possible bond between the living and the dead; Yukio Mishima's Yoroboshi: The Blind Young Man, an adaptation of a celebrated Nö drama; Seiichi Yashiro's Hokusai Sketchbooks, a ribald biographical work about a famous ukiyo-e artist whose cavalier lifestyle and individualistic philosophy were extraordinary in feudal times; Masakazu Yamazaki's The Boat Is a Sailboat which examines alienation and confused identity in some likeable protagonists from modern Tokyo; and Minoru Betsuyaku's The Move, an abstract treatment of human destiny, focusing on a single family's futile journey in search of a better life. A selected bibliography of currently available works on modern Japanese theater concludes the volume. inventory #6941.
