The Purley Shales are the lowest, dominantly red, division of the Stockingford Shales that crop out near Nuneaton, in the Midlands. Poorly exposed, they are not notably fossiliferous, but after 1961 it was possible to collect fossils, mainly trilobites, from horizons of late Lower Cambrian and early Middle Cambrian age. They are described here.
