This volume presents the results of a comprehensive project on the petroleum geology of Northwest China undertaken by the Bureau of Resources and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, which aimed at reviewing the Phanerozoic stratigraphy, palaeogeography and plate tectonics of the region. This region, which has considerable economic potential as a source of petroleum, gas and minerals, has been for some years the scene of intense activity by exploration geologists and provincial geological surveys. A vast reservoir of information on stratigraphy, palaeontology, tectonics and geochemistry produced by these workers was consulted for incorporation in the present book, and their reports, often written in Chinese and not formally published, contain data that are now summarised or listed in English for the first time.
