Merging a poetic reverence for the art of fly fishing with a wealth of practical information and technical advice, Vincent Marinaro's, A Modern Dry-Fly Code is the classic guide to dry-fly fishing. Originally written in 1950 as the sport was languishing for lack of innovation, this book helped bring about a fly-fishing renaissance on riverbanks across America. An ideal book for readers who share Marinaro's deep reverence for the fisherman's connection to the unspoiled natural world, A Modern Dry-Fly Code will have you yearning for the sound of running brook water, eager to try some of the author's legendary fly patterns, casting techniques, and scouting tips. The product of a lifetime of experience wading in the waters of the Letort, Big Spring, and other south Pennsylvania streams, A Modern Dry-Fly Code significantly changed the way American anglers think about dry-fly fishing. In addition to detailed information on matching hatches, trout behavior and biology, and where and when to cast which types of flies, Marinaro introduces several ideas of his own invention based on the results of his many experimental outings. Among the revolutionary ideas set forth in this book are Marinaro's 'minutiae', miniscule flies designed to imitate the dozens of tiny insects that swarm over the surface of the water as well as his thorax-style technique for crafting superb dry-flies. For beginners and expert fishermen alike, there is much wisdom to be gleaned from Marinaro's inventive and curious inquiry into the nature and practice of fly-fishing.

Seller's Description:
Good in Very Good jacket. A Modern Dry-Fly Code has been described as "the best angling work of the last half century" and "the first original American contribution to fly fishing." It is a towering classic-intense, knowledgeable, and written with exacting care. Forty-seven years ago, when it was first published, it was far ahead of its time; today its insights into the behavior patterns of insects and feeding trout, its development of new and highly effective fly-fishing techniques, and its dramatic innovations in dry-fly dressing will remain valid and highly effective. Marinaro's reevaluation of the importance of terrestrial insects and his development of such patterns as the Jassid, the Ant, and the Pontoon Hopper expand the fly-fishing season far beyond the traditional period. His patterns, shown in full color, are widely acclaimed and used with striking success throughout the country. His valuable streamside studies remain models for anyone who would observe the most mysterious and intriguing of fish-the trout. Finally, A Modern Dry-Fly Code presents the first complete treatise on America's now-famous limestone waters, a generous ratio of practical lore and engaging reminiscence, and a profound rationale for the art of fly fishing. (53/4 X 81/2, 298 pages, color photos, b&w photos, illustrations). "While Vince was not the most prolific angling author what he wrote is among the most profound and insightful in all of fly fishing literature. In his book, American Fly Fishing, A History, angling historian Paul Schullery made the following comments on the importance of Vincent C. Marinaro to the angling world."But for sheer originality and literary quality, no book of this era approached Vincent Marinaro's A Modern Dry-Fly Code [1950]. Marinaro's book, based on decades of experience on the Letort, Big Spring, and other south Pennsylvania streams, amounted to a substantial rethinking of traditional dry-fly definitions. Not only did he espouse a much broader imitation base including many terrestrials, he reconsidered the structure of the dry fly as it had been developed for mayflies. In all cases, his modifications, though they may not have converted the majority of anglers, found enduring niches in fly theory. Rarely has a fly-fishing writer ventured to change so much and lived to see his work recognized and incorporated into the body of fly-fishing practice." [American Fly-Fishing, Paul Schullery, Page 197-198].

Classic book is odd and entertaining
I'm realtively new to fly fishing, but in my eagerness to learn I quickly turned up Marinaro's as a classic account of the 'early-modern' phase of dry-fly fishing. He's got great tips, interesting observations and an almost religious love of the fish and the rivers.
Anyone who reads this book, though, will have to be able to enjoy Marinaro's highly peculiar prose style, which reads more like a romantic novel from the early 19th century than a non-fiction book from 50 years ago. There's lots of references to 'noble' battles with legendary fish, and some of the sentences go on for what seems like pages.
Also, the book deals almost exclusively with the flys and limestone rivers of Pennsylvania, so for a westerner like me, some of the references and fly types are completely unknown.
Still, any fishing book that i am willing to read out loud to my wife and friends has got to be worth a lot.
